The last registered document was 6617, while the real amount of the documents in the series exceeds the number due to existence of additional documents numbered by letters a.
In the most cases originals the samizdat documents (in this context an original is a document delivered to the radios) are filed along with stencils used for publication or printouts of the document, notes by staff researchers, and usually by reference materials including related samizdat documents. Some documents (those published in the West before they were reproduced in “Materialy Samizdata') were not included in the series, but had a registration sheet filed instead. Some items are missing.
The first 3000 published samizdat documents are accompanied by registration sheets (a special form filled in for each document) that contain the fields as following: Classifications; Biblio (i.e. Registration number and title); Index keywords; Details and description; Cross-references in samizdat; Initial source (including issue of the Samizdat Materials bulletin where the item appeared); Published version; Notes; Sources; Press treatments. There are few missing registration sheets, and not all fields are filled out, Biblio was the only obligatory field. Documents with numbers above 3000 are accompanied by Materials of Samizdat cover pages listing documents included under their registration numbers. During 1972-1977 several registers (both in Russian and English languages) were published, where the first issue indicates 559 documents, and the last reached the number of 3000. The series represents one of the biggest samizdat collections in the West. The description of the Samizdat Archives classification system in 1974 ('The Archiv Samizdata', [RL, 1974], HU OSA 300-85-47 Administrative Files) lists the following categories of the samizdat material (which at that time numbered 2094 registered documents): a) documents concerning individual complaints or specific themes, which is by far the largest group (784 registered documents); b) literary and philosophical Samizdat (120 registered documents).
